In the mid-19th century the vision for Hospitalfield was crystallised by the artist Patrick Allan Fraser and his
wife Elisabeth. They were a progressive and radical couple in their time and, as per their bequest, Hospitalfield has been a place of learning for artists since 1902. The art college opening first as a residential
academy and then in 1938 becoming a renowned post graduate painting school.
With their audiences they devise and deliver a dynamic public programme that chimes with their interests and concerns,
inspires learning and animates the extraordinary Arts & Crafts heritage of the site.
