Falkland Palace, a Renaissance-era palace in Fife, Scotland, was once a favorite country retreat and hunting lodge for Scottish royalty, particularly Mary, Queen of Scots. Built between 1501 and 1541, it was commissioned by King James IV and James V and is known for its French-inspired architecture and the oldest tennis court in Britain, originally built for King James V.
Today, it is a popular tourist destination, owned by the Hereditary Keeper of Falkland Palace, Ninian Crichton Stuart, and managed by the National Trust for Scotland.
The Town of Falkland itself is portrayed as the 1940s village of Inverness, in the hit TV series Outlander, where the main character, Claire Randall, first travels back in time to the 18th century.
