The abbey is also the burial site of several Scottish kings and queens, including Robert the Bruce, King of Scots, who lead Scotland to independence from English rule, He famously won the battle of Bannockburn and signed the treaty of Northampton, Solidifying Scotland’s freedom.

Adjacent to the abbey are the ruins of Dunfermline Palace, a royal residence built in the 16th century. The palace, once a favourite retreat for Scottish monarchs, features impressive stonework and remnants of its grand halls.

Today, Dunfermline Abbey and Palace are managed by Historic Environment Scotland and attract visitors for their
