Blackness Castle - Fort William

Blackness Castle, located on the shores of the Firth of Forth, is a 15th-century fortress notable for its distinctive "ship-like" structure. Originally built by the Crichton family as a stronghold, it later served various military purposes, including as a garrison and a prison.

In popular culture, Blackness Castle gained prominence as a filming location for the television adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s "Outlander" series. In the show, it represents "Blackness," the fortress where Jamie Fraser is imprisoned in Season 2, as well as serving as a backdrop for other significant scenes. Its dramatic stone walls and scenic location contribute to the atmospheric representation of the historical narrative in the series.

Today, Blackness Castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and is open to the public. Visitors can explore its well-preserved features, including the impressive towers and ramparts, while enjoying stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the Firth of Forth. The castle remains a fascinating historical site, with its connections to both Scottish history and contemporary popular culture through "Outlander."
