Housed in an 1830s jute mill in Dundee's historic Blackness Industrial area, Verdant Works Museum invites visitors to step back in time to an era where the mills were at the heart of Dundee, hearing stories of millworkers brought to life through working machinery demonstrations and local volunteer guides.
Verdant Works takes its name from the abundance of greenery and nurseries that surrounded the site when its first brick was laid in the early 1830s. At its peak in the 1860s, over 500 workers passed in and out of its gates daily, as the city's jute boom roared and its reputation as 'juteopolis' was born. During this time, Dundee was also known as 'she town' - women outnumbered men 3 to 1 in the mills.
Verdant Works Museum shares the city's industrial and social history in engaging ways through its refurbished corridors, alongside running education programmes, workshops and more for young learners. In its award-winning cafe and gift shop, Verdant Works Museum champions local producers and suppliers; from handmade jute mice made only metres from the Museum, to homemade scones served with Tayside jam, to seasonal menus that reflect the best produce that Dundee and beyond has to offer.
