Glamis Castle has a rich history dating back to the 14th century, and inspired one of Shakespeare's most famous plays, Macbeth. This Primary stop to the castle with its beautiful gardens is a visitor’s favourite.
As an alternative to the recommended tour you could head more inland, towards Perth, and discover the wonderful Scone Palace, perhaps following that by viewing the "stone of Destiny" at Perth’s Museum home, a street or two away, and a short walk takes you to the Perth Art Gallery where you can admire the work on display.
The Recommended tour leads to Arbroath, a North Sea town with a historic Abbey founded in 1178 and a bustling working harbour. There are a few optional stops in or around the town if you’re interested, the Arbikie Distillery is an absolute must for those who like a tipple be it whisky, gin or vodka, wonderful tasting places perhaps combined with fab food. For those who appreciate the arts and the crafts we have Hospitalfield together there with beautiful gardens.
The Signal Tower Museum & Bell Rock Lighthouse visitor centre offers a brief visit with a wealth of maritime history. The Bell Rock Lighthouse, an iconic structure built 11 miles offshore, holds the distinction of being the world’s oldest sea-washed lighthouse.
Heading south along the coast from Arboath towards home, we will pass notable locations such as Carnoustie, before arriving at Broughty Castle and the quaint Dundee suburb of Broughty Ferry. The ferry is a great place to chill and relax, with a mix of independent retailers such as Bella Mella & Tiger Lilly, ladies outfitters, and Pretty Fly made on the premises bespoke jewellery.
